Life Sciences
North East England is at the forefront of research and development into ageing and health, and stem cells.
Life sciences is seen as one of the main high-growth sectors of the future and considerable levels of public investment are going into its development. The commercial aspects of this are led by the Centre of Excellence for Life Sciences (CELS).
For example, the Institute of Ageing and Health at Newcastle University has the UK’s biggest interdisciplinary research group in this field.
As well as being the country’s leading region for pharmaceutical manufacturing, it also has a strong research base in medical diagnostics and a cluster of manufacturing companies in the field.
The International Centre for Life in Newcastle has the UK’s first Bioscience Village, where 500 people are employed in research, education, development and the commercialisation of bioscience technologies.

This is one of the businesses attracted to the region with the help of CELS and One NorthEast. It is a leading provider of consultancy and interim management services to new and growing life sciences companies, and will be a major player in developing the sector here. Ithaka’s North East England operation is based at NetPark, the leading edge business and research facility created in Sedgefield, County Durham.
