Process Industries
More than 200 companies – many of them global names - involved in chemicals, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals are members of the North East Process Industry Cluster. The sector as a whole employs around 35,000 people.
In addition at least 350 companies are involved in the first and second tier supply chain.
Tees Valley is home to the largest petrochemical complex in the UK. It also has Europe’s biggest hydrogen collection and storage network (see Fuel Cells sector).
More than £1bn has been invested in the region’s process industries during the past three years, including the largest biomanufacturing investment in the world during 2003-2004.
The development of the sector is supported by top-ranking research at the region’s universities into an impressive range of advanced science and related technologies. The Centre of Excellence for Process Innovation (CPI) is also conducting research and is co-ordinating the commercial exploitation of emerging technologies.
