Tourism
This is one of the fastest growing sectors of the region’s economy.
Overseas tourists and weekend break visitors are being attracted in increasing numbers by the natural beauty and cultural heritage of North East England.
The region has a big reputation for the warmth and friendliness of its people. There is great diversity of places to eat and things to do. It is a place with literally something for everyone.
For example, alongside a rich choice of local foods there is a tremendous selection of Indian, Italian, Greek and Japanese restaurants – to name but a few of those from overseas - and Newcastle has one of the most thriving Chinatowns in the UK.
Activities include classical and rock music concerts at venues led by Sage Gateshead. Within an hour’s drive of Newcastle are the glorious sandy beaches of Northumberland, Hadrian’s Wall and Durham Cathedral World Heritage Sites and some of the finest medieval castles. Among the many museums are the award-winning Beamish Open Air and Bowes. Add to that Alnwick Castle Garden, the North Pennines Areas of Outstanding Beauty, and much, much more.
Shopping, too, is a major attraction, with designer clothes stores springing up in Newcastle and at Gateshead MetroCentre, one of the biggest out-of-town retail complexes in Europe.
The influx of visitors has increased recently as a result of the big impact of the ‘Passionate People. Passionate Places’ Regional Image Campaign. National newspaper and TV advertising has created extremely positive perceptions about the region.
